"Out-evolved by a telephone sanitiser.
Arthur Dent (2,000,000 BC)
According
to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy that is what happened to our
predecessors on the primordial Earth two million years ago, but about
us? Are we fated to go the same way? Will some
super-evolved marketing consultant, television producer, or hair
dresser do for us? Will we be replaced by another species?
Will we evolve into super-intelligent creatures of pure energy?
Will we just atrophy into lazy blobs? Will we create our own
successors without realising it? Or will we, as Olaf Stapledon
asserted in his novel Last and First Men, just go 'round
and 'round in a pointless cycle of throwing up increasingly silly
versions of ourselves until God says "Sod this for a game of soldiers"
and tells us to get out of the pool? |
