Where
The Quatermass Xperiment (1957) dealt with an attempt to invade the
Earth, Quatermass 2 is about an invasion that has already
established a bridgehead on our planet.
Quatermass is in the middle of a fight with Whitehall over funding for
his proposed Moon colony. Frustrated by inaction, he
investigates a fall of meteors nearby only to discover his Moon colony
sitting smack in the middle of the English countryside and guarded by
blank-faced men with machine guns. When he makes enquiries, he
is told by officials that it is a top secret project for making
synthetic food and he should forget about it. He also learns
that the meteors are artificial. They contain a life form that
breathes methane and controls the mind of any person they infect, such
as the ominous guards at the plant, and that these things have
infiltrated the highest levels of government so that they can build
their duplicate of Quatermass's Moon colony. Only in this case,
the colony is to help their kind survive on Earth as they push forward
their invasion.
The frightening thing about this scenario is that the invasion relies
on the very vigilance that we expect will protect us. The
invaders use our own dedication, secrecy, willingness to co-operate,
and even the so-called checks and balances of official enquires to
cover up their schemes. Progress is based on organisation and
teamwork, but what happens when those very strengths are subverted and
turned against us?
You get stinky thousand foot high monsters running about treading on
people. |
