True idiocy survives like cockroaches. The
breakaway escape system returned in this proposal from the 1950s.
Take a perfectly good fighter plane and compromise the airframe with a
breakaway section that adds to the weight and adds all sorts of
wonderful places for control cables and wiring to go wrong, and all
for a marginal improvement in safety over an ejector seat.
Of course, if you take a hit forward of the wings
you're ground scatter, but what do you expect for two bits?
