Whoa! Now this is a magazine I’d subscribe
to; one filled with lots of articles on how to build really dangerous
things. Crude bench-top arc welders with bare metal connectors,
thermite bombs, anything involving sulphuric acid; it makes me go all
tingly!
You would never find this on the cover of a DIY
magazine today. Our world is one that lives under the yoke of such a
perverse view of personal responsibility that it feels like we live in
a combination of brothel and nursery school. Back then you were
pretty much expected to understand that things that blast out massive
electric arcs are dangerous and you fiddled with such things at your
own risk. Today such an attitude is only applied to turkey frying.
Gernsback had a similar regard to science in
general. The laboratory had given the world wonders such as radio
and bakelite shoehorns. What other marvels might it give us? Okay,
there may be some small matters of property damage, health problems,
and people not returning your calls, but this isn’t just science, it’s
SCIENCE! |
