But why all this focus on food?  One reason is that I have an unhealthy obsession with it.  The other is that we eat a hell of a lot of it, as shown in this illustration from the July 1932 issue of Popular Science.  In 56 years, the average American eats a ton and a half of beef, enough milk to swim, in and enough butter to... I don't like to think about that.

The bismuth tablet hasn't been made that could cope with that amount of tuck.  This is why it isn't a good idea to eat it all at one meal and get it out of the way.
