The Sensorama camera |
Virtual reality circa 1962.
While cinemas were going for the gigantic spectacle of Cinerama,
Cinemascope, Vistavision, and Technirama that were intended to make
your local movie house into a balcony overlooking the Gand Canyon,
Morton Heilig's Sensorama went in the opposite direction and gave you
the glorious wide-screen spectacle of sticking your head in a box.
True, it was colour and 3D, but it also had "motion" and "vibration"
(the seat shook), and "wind" (a fan blew in your face).
As for aroma, since it was
intended to be set up in game arcades, you got that even if the
Sensorama was unplugged. |
