A
pretty neat little prediction that came close to the mark, the Space
Dumper was only seen briefly in the last episode of the series, but it
is noteworthy because of its uncanny resemblance to a real-life space
launcher, the ill-fated
Delta Clipper.
Like the Clipper, the Space Dumper could lift off vertically and then
land on its tail jets, but unlike the Clipper, the Space Dumper could
then take on a cargo load (say, an alien doomsday device with the
clock ticking) and then blast off again, this time using the aft
section as a launching base while the finned forward section cruised
off into interplanetary orbit, thereby eliminating the bother of
carrying the dead weight of the after section's empty fuel tanks.
It's a throwaway detail, but sometimes the neatest little predictions
can be found there.
