I
think one of the things that makes Futurama so impressive even today
is not the imaginative nature of the predictions, but the restraint
which the planners of the exhibit showed regarding the future.
The buildings you see here are large and of a modern style that was in
sharp contrast with those of the day, but they weren't
the insane glass-box
city-buildings holding hundreds of thousands of people
that the likes of Le Corbusier was advocating. There may
be elevated pedestrian ways, but only a story
above the motor traffic on the ground.
No sky bridges or roof-top zeppelin hangers can be seen anywhere.
But there is impressive engineering aplenty. |
