The unnamed rocket that
lifts the Phoenix into orbit is another interesting little Gerry
Anderson creation. It combines not only features of American,
Soviet and European boosters of the 1960s, but includes a degree of
pure dramatic mechanical detail that one generally associates with the
more unrestrained early issues of The Fantastic Four.
The rocket is also noteworthy in
that it's a bit of a package deal. If you act now, for the price
of the rocket we'll throw in absolutely free its own personal vehicle
assembly building that will allow you to assemble and service the
vehicle right on the launch pad. When you're ready to launch,
just roll back the two sides and off you go.

We got the idea from toy
packaging that turns into play sets.
I'm a bit annoyed that
the rocket was never given a name in the film. Not only is it a
neat bit of original model design, but its launching, which is one of
the highlights of the movie, is so strikingly realistic that one
almost suspects that NASA could have...
No, that's silly. |
