Then there's the old standby of waiting around for altruistic aliens to plop down a monolith and give you an evolutionary boost.  Mind you, you might have a bit of a wait; say, several hundred millennia or so. 

Then, wouldn't you know it, three will probably show up at once. 

On the other hand, you're also relying a lot on the benevolence of the Obstetricians from Beyond if you're not going to end up with a load of scary children with glowing eyes and a taste for mind control.
