You can't say Paul wasn't fair. If he was going to make
weird speculative drawings of other planets, then by God, he was going
to weird speculative drawing about us! It says a lot about
Paul's humility as well as his sense of humour that he could
poke fun at
just how far off the mark his speculations probably were.
Here
we see a group of Martians with a statue representing their conception
of an Earthman. Note that Walt
Disney must have been involved. Because Earth is a watery planet, the Martians
concluded that Earth is inhabited by an amphibious race
grown more than a little tubby from an overabundance of food.
We now know that this is generally true only of
certain parts of the Mediterranean and the west coast of the United
states.

This
picture is a bit small, but you can still make out how the Martians
were supposed to see us. Apparently Earthmen are all chubby
teddy bears living in pepper pots on the Louisiana Bayou. |
