Normally Paul would just play fast and loose with the facts for poetic licence, but this is one time that he gets it just plain wrong.  The star in question is Alpheratz, which is in the constellation of Andromeda.  True, so is the galaxy of Andromeda, but Alpheratz is only 97 light years from Earth, while the galaxy of Andromeda is a good 2,000,000 light years further away.  That's not exactly in the same neighbourhood.  Nevertheless, our Earth travellers seem to be having a pretty good time what with the light show and the bubble people.
