In the 21st century there will be no
decent user interface designers. In The Time Travelers
(1964) we learn that a hundred years in the future man will be capable
of building robots that appear almost human, except the heads will
look like half-chewed pencil erasers. You think they could at
least put ears on them.
The Time Travelers is one of those sci-fi films
that insists, despite our protests, on giving us a tour of the wonders
of the future whether it is sun rooms.. of the FUTURE or flange-making
machines... of the FUTURE! So excited is the film with these
technical marvels that it happily brings what little plot it has to a
crashing halt in order to show us a robot factory in a gag that goes on for way too long.
Happy music abounds and repeats itself to the point of ensuing madness
as we are shown every detail of future robot construction. The
filmmakers have to be given ten out of ten for effort in that they use
stage illusions and slight of hand to pull off the movie's special
effects, but the set up is so long on each bit that by the time we get
to the pay off, half the audience has gone for more popcorn. |
