This Moon base from one of Hugo Gernsback's
magazines has an actual purpose to it. This solar-powered
installation is intended for processing ore. Exactly what kind
of ore it is or how it's being processed is a bit vague, but we do get
to see some serious hardware on the surface. However, there is one thing
that always bothers me about these bases. Having done a good
deal of underwater work, I'm aware of how difficult it is to do even
the simplest of tasks while wearing breathing apparatus. Common
scuba gear in shallow water quickly reduces one's speed to a crawl and
working a pressure suit is less like scuba than deep sea diving gear. Pressurised overalls they are not. How a load of navvies in
spacesuits built something like this I have never seen adequately
explained. |
