If the 1950s were anything to go by, the
development of nuclear propulsion was supposed to send most of the
world's freight underwater. In a good way, that is.
By the year 2000 we were supposed to have atomic
submarine oil tankers decked out with natty observation galleries steaming along in their hundreds beneath the Arctic ice
cap to hungry refineries around the world.
On second thought, in the oily wake of the Torrey Canyon
and Exxon Valdez, perhaps it's better the way things turned out. |
